Sit, stand, sit, stand, leave…

I remember as a child being told to sit still in the pews of our little country church. This was quite a task for me as a child as I was a bit hyperactive. But the order of service of the time dictated that we would sit quietly in our seats, or stand and sing solemnly. In retrospect I feel a bit ashamed of it.

As an adult I’ve been to quite a few concerts. At these concerts I didn’t spend much time in my seat because I was too excited about the performance that was going on. Why haven’t we as a church related this same feeling in church services? Pshaw, excitement about God and his message? We are so excited to see that concert, but when we walk in to that sanctuary we throw on our mournful ways. Where is the excitement?

It’s no wonder we have a hard time attracting new people to the church. If you had no preconcieved notion of religious services and you walked into a place that worshipped like that, would you go back? Maybe if you needed some time to balance a checkbook or catch a quick nap. We are fighting a losing battle, trying to hold on to traditional ways of doing things simply for traditions sake. Why do we do the things we do in church? Are they scriptural(rarely) or is it because that’s the way it’s always been done?

You can keep your dead services. You can call me charismatic. You can call me evangelical. You can call me a Heretic.

I’ll continue to see my musicians stand on stage with their instruments and praise God in any form we can. Because ultimately it doesn’t matter if you find my worship style to be pleasing…it only matters that God finds it pleasing.
